Want to get into River fishing this winter, instead of going to commercial lakes.
My knowledge of decent stretches in Essex is limited, so any guidance is more than welcome and appreciated.

But as a thought, give the tackle shop a call, there is a good one and he may give you the local info
You sound on the right lines anyway - enjoy and let us know how it goes
I'm trying to organise a trip there at the moment, a mate and I are sorting out with a lad called Dave Roberts, a local guide who will show us the ropes on new stretches and tailor a day around what we want to catch
Stunning river though, and some handsome fish to boot

Thanks Crassus. I'm visiting any of the two sections that are Lower carrots, Luggsworth and Elms/Lechmere, will decide on the day as we have a 6am start. I'm taking 14mm Marine Halibut Pellet, a block of cheese, Sonus Spicy Sausage Pellet and a tuna and corn groundbait mix.
I've got a few 40, 60 and 70g weights so they should be ok.

Where are you going mate?
I've fished up there a fair bit and Block is on it
Last time we fished near Ross, my mate had the local detail, we cut a ridge in the back of a large halibut pellet, super glued a size 8 in the ridge by the shank so that the bend sat out at right angles. Then put the hook, short hook length and lead in a pva bag of small pellets and away we went - worked well
You can do similar with a feeder
A golden rule would be fishing the crease, cast just beyond then ease the bait just into the crease and let it find it's own resting point
If you are on the outside of a bend, have depth under your feet, under cut bank or useful overhanging branches start by fishing close - I would always use a bloody great lump of cheese paste first, no loose feed, if there is a chub present and feeding you will get a take, sometimes immediately and always savage
Plenty that could be said subject to your ability/knowledge/venue but three quick points
1/ keep the rigs simple and strong, with a good size hook
2/ baits I would take would be cheese paste, lob worm, pellet, and meat
3/ if you have a near feature or eddy, don't be afraid to try a big bait, and I mean very big, particularly if it is up/rising or carrying colour - I have used half a tin plus of meat (big tin) on a size two, freelined, no hair/lead or anything, use a long baiting needle to pull the line through, push the top of the hook back into the bait and put a grass stalk under the bend, just underarm it out a couple of rods and let the flow take it where ever, it will find a natural slack - DON'T LEAVE THE ROD, takes by this method are insane
Cheese Paste Recipe
25% blue cheese
25% mature cheddar
50% shortcrust pastry
Put it in a blender, mix then squeeze into a ball, put in a plastic bag and leave in a warm environment - let it fester something rotten, never freeze/fridge it, it gets better with age, a good furry coat of mould is perfect!

Glenn, A mate of mine does a fair bit and he uses a method called "tea bagging"(OH er MRS!) which is basically a lead, hair rigged pellet with a PVA bag full of particles.

Tips for Barbel fishing, rigs, hooks etc. I'm off for a day's fishing next week on the Wye near Hereford and Barbel and good Chubb are feeding and being caught. Only fished a few rivers and usually trotting or swim feeder so if any of you have experience of Barbel and what's best please let me know.

I drove past Shadwell Basin last week and saw someone fishing there. I used to fish at Limehouse Basin in the 80's but thought that all finished once they started building there.
Anyone fished it as it is on my way home so may give it a try.

Is it me or does the mainline seem a lot thinner now days? Also, don't get me started on this new metric of the line diameter, I've spooled my reels with 5lb and 6lb line, but fucked if I manage to get it through the eye of the hook.

Yes, we clocked the same dwellings.
I assumed they were the homes of Bargees (they are like knackers/pike's, but live on boats instead of caravans) but you could be right about off-gridding. I like to think Bargees would take more pride in their abode. Those rotting tubs and tarpaulins were a bloody eyesore among such otherworldly beauty.
All those Marsh harriers, too.
I dream about the Norfolk Broads at least twice a week.

I have been aware of the effect of human female hormones on fish for many years. I don't remember the effect being specific to currently menstruating females (I assumed the fish were attracted to oestrogen or progesterone or something). I read of male anglers 'borrowing' their wives' public hairs to add to lures, and female anglers having great success when wading. In fact I remember having a good-natured argument about it on WHO with a poster who was doubting and incredulous and I had to tell him to get Googling (can't remember who it was now)
At any rate, my Coates pheasant tail nymph was not supercharged or weaponised with any issue from my person. Just the standard metal hook, chenille and feathers. I was living with a chap at the time who was an enthusiastic, if not very successful, fly angler. We lived in a beautiful part of Devon. The bloke who ran our local tackle shop did evening classes on how to tie flies. Brilliant marketing, considering he also sold the clamps, hooks, chenille and feathers...

Block I’m the same but it’s been about 28 years for me. Gave it all up when I found nightclubs.
When I first walked back into a tackle shop last year it was proper confusing. The carp tackle and tactics is unbelievable.
Slowly getting there though.
